LATE SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2013
THE FOLLOWING SERVICES BEYOND OUR REGULAR PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED TO BETTER SERVE YOU. PLEASE CALL IF NEEDED. THANKS.
TREES AND SHRUBS
SYSTEMIC INSECT CONTROL: Many insects as well as new insects into the area are appearing at this time. A preventative insect control application will insure that they will not get a foothold in your trees and shrubs. Breaking the cycles in the early stages preserves your landscape.
CITRUS: Fall is a great time to spray citrus because of scale infestations. Scale can cause death of a limb or tree if left unsprayed. This is also a good time to clean up white fly and aphids to prevent overwintering. Ask about RX for Asian phyllid.
FUNGUS PROBLEMS: The humid, warm weather is a fungus threat to your lawn. Please water in the early morning, not in the evening. Going into the evening wet creates the perfect environment to promote fungus. Call for curative application.
AERATION: ALTERNATIVE: We have a new product, PLANTS CHOICE , a SOIL SALT REMOVER, This is a different approach to aeration, by moving salts through the soil. This is to be used in areas that cannot tolerate plugs for any length of time. Please call for details and price for your lawn.
OVERSEEDING/DETHATCHING SEASON– The months of Sep/Oct is the best time to renovate lawns that need reseeding. The lawn has less competition from weeds during the fall and will fill in without the threat of fungus problems that we see in the summer. Please let me know as soon as possible if we can do this for you this fall. A beautiful lawn by the holidays can be yours. Cost effective compared to sod.
PRE-EMERGANT FOR GROUNDCOVERS- Before winter grasses germinate with the first rains it is best to apply pre-emergent to groundcovers and weed problem areas. We also can control Bermuda grass in groundcover areas.
FALL GROUNDCOVER FERTILIZATION- A great time to fertilize groundcover areas with the wonderful weather we have in the fall.: Fungus problems – Pythium – slick spots, dying out. This must be treated to cure, usually one application.
SNAIL CONTROL- Unfortunately the snails multiply quickly during the fall. It is best to control early before heavy infestations occur. Snails cause great damage especially to fall color. Two applications do a very good job. Decollate snails also available.

NEWSLETTER –SPRING/SUMMER 2013
Spring/Summer check list.
- Increase watering days on sprinkler system, check for proper coverage.
- Preventative insect control with Imidacloprid 75WSP for4-6 months control of whitefly, scales, aphids, and other sucking/chewing insects.
- Proper fertilization for groundcovers, turf, and trees and shrubs for health.
- Early gopher and ground squirrel control and snail control.
- Prune damaged plants and trees from cold damage for new growth..
TURF- The heat is here and long days ahead it is time to increase sprinkler timers and check sprinklers for proper coverage. For those we aerate we do this service free as to insure all is working well. Recommendations, estimates for fix or improvement offered. The late spring application will include an insecticide to be watered in for root damaging insects (sod webworm, weevil, and beetle). Fertilizers through the summer are slow release for maximum health (protects against fungus spread). Post emergence weed control on a continuing basis is applied.
LIQUID AERATION WITHOUT THE PLUGS – Plants Choice, a soil salt remover does the same thing and is recommended over aeration for hybrid fescue lawns. This does not break the seal of the pre-emergent weed control (applied during the winter applications) that mechanical aeration will do.
TREES/SHRUBS-Many insects become a problem during these months. Whitefly, aphids, mealybug, spider mites, thrip, adelgid, pine tip moth. We are using the latest and most effective pesticides that give long lasting control. For any problems, let us know and a solution will be offered. Some of the plants most affected are hibiscus, xylosma, pines, alders, corals, ficus, eucalyptus, photinia, pittosporum, acacia, as well as others. Imidacloprid 75WSP, which is absorbed through the roots, is long lasting, and should be applied at first sign of infestations.
GROUNDCOVERS-Fertilizers need to be applied at least every three months. For those pesky grasses and weeds in your groundcovers, we have selective herbicides that will eliminate them. Pre-emergent for weed control, go a long way and are very economical compared to hand labor. We have many more options with new materials, so that problem that couldn’t be fixed may now be.
FRUIT TREES – Citrus needs scale, aphid, whitefly, and mite control. Applied after fruit has set (post blossom). All other fruits we leave upsprayed until after fruit harvest. The winter dormant sprays are most effective with these.
SNAIL CONTROL- Decollate snails are a safe alternative to dangerous snail baits. We know how to properly apply for best results.
GOPHERS/GROUND SQUIRRELS- Are very active in spring with new litters which can cause erosion problems and damage to landscape. We use very effective products.
